'Akira' Remake Plot Synopsis Leaked
The casting website 'Acting Auditions' has (unintentionally?) leaked a condensed synopsis for the U.S. remake of 'Akira' (spoilers after the jump).
There's already been a good amount of nerd-rage over the remake, over aspects such as the Americanisation of the cast and setting. But now with Tron Legacy star Garrett Hedlund cast as protagonist Kaneda (pictured above: what I believe to be the entire reason for such), it looks like Warner are looking for the rest of the characters. However, what the actors auditioning for it are being told seems to diverge from the original's plot a fair amount.
According to the website, the film will run as such:
"Kaneda is a bar owner in Neo-Manhattan who is stunned when his brother, Tetsuo, is abducted by government agents led by The Colonel. Desperate to get his brother back, Kaneda agrees to join with Ky Reed and her underground movement who are intent on revealing to the world what truly happened to New York City thirty years ago when it was destroyed. Kaneda believes their theories to be ludicrous but after finding his brother again, is shocked when he displays telekinetic powers.
Ky believes Tetsuo is headed to release a young boy, Akira, who has taken control of Tetsuo's mind. Kaneda clashes with The Colonel's troops on his way to stop Tetsuo from releasing Akira but arrives too late. Akira soon emerges from his prison courtesy of Tetsuo as Kaneda races in to save his brother before Akira once again destroys Manhattan island, as he did thirty years ago."
It looks like Warner wasn't content with just excising the Hiroshima-analog elements of the plot, and have also decided to throw the gang-violence social commentary out the window along with it.
George Takei is yet to comment, but I hope he does.
