DER GOLEM with live soundtrack by SAWCHESTRA

DER GOLEM with live soundtrack by SAWCHESTRA Main Image

Back in the 70s, the BBC2 rock music programme, THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST used to play excerpts from silent films to rock music – it was one of those strange combinations that shouldn’t have worked but did, adding a surreal aspect to both the music and the film. Wegener’s The Golem is a film perfectly suited to this concept.

One of the most important contributions to German Expressionist cinema, this classic silent fantasy horror tells the story of a Jewish rabbi in 16th century Prague who activates the Golem, a monstrous clay figure, to help save his congregation from persecution.

We are proud to have the live soundtrack to this classic film provided by SAWCHESTRA, an orchestra of musical saws, children’s toys and unusual and found instruments.

Audience members are invited to play along and help create the soundtrack (instruments provided).
