Sci-Fi Reading Groups

With online DVD rentals from places such as LoveFilm and Amazon pretty much destroying the high street video shop, it's good to know that most local libraries carry a good and often eclectic range of rental DVDs that don't include the latest hyped-up releases - and for a very low price too. However, libraries still stock books that you can borrow and take home to read, for free. Most have a decent sci-fi and fantasy section, and some also stock graphic novels.

If you like reading science fiction and fantasy from old stalwarts such as Asimov, to more modern writers such as Lois McMaster Bujold or David Drake, and discussing it with like-minded people, then reading groups are a great place to do it - and libraries are the ideal venue. If this is of interest to you and you live in London's East End (Hackney to be precise) then go along to CLR James Library at 24-30 Dalston road, London E8 3AZ on Tuesday 15th January at 6.30pm, for a 6.45pm start, of the inaugural science fiction reading group. It will finish at 7.45pm.

The first meeting will be a getting to know you session where life, the universe and everything may possibly be discussed, along with the consumption of tea, coffee and maybe even biscuits too - and don't forget to bring your towel! Please contact David at ReadScienceFiction@Hackney.gov.uk. Places are limited so sign up now.

For this reading group you should ideally be a resident of Hackney or work in the borough. Failing that, your place of work/residence must be an adjacent borough. Transport wise there are a lot of buses. Dalston railway station and the somewhat larger Liverpool Street station are down the road. You'll be required to register with Hackney Libraries, although that should be possible to do on the evening if you take the right ID, as you need to be a member to take out our first book Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?. As it's a small library function room it will be on a first come first served basis.

GRAPHIC NOVEL READING GROUP IN LAMBETH

The Tate Library in Streatham, London SW16 has a well-established graphic novel reading group. If you are interested in joining this, its next meeting is on Monday January 21 at 7pm. Contact Pedro by e-mail or phone him on 020 7926 8034.

The library said it would run a sci-fi/fantasy reading group if it got enough interest. Contact me on the e-mail below if you are interested in a reading group in Lambeth.

If you know of other sci-fi/fantasy/graphic novel reading groups in London, or anywhere else for that matter, then let me know and we'll start compiling a list. chrisp@sci-fi-london.com
