Bionic Woman - Competition

Revisiting cult TV series is rather in vogue at the moment, mainly due to the success of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, and the new(ish) DOCTOR WHO. There are already promises of 're-imaginings' of BLAKE'S 7 and THE PRISONER, but few have come close to matching GALATICA (and that goes for new shows too) for quality. Some shows, however, have been more successful than others. An attempt to revive the classic 70s show, KOLCHAK, THE NIGHTSTALKER failed because it was Darren McGavin's role. While the original show was groundbreaking, at the time, the format has become familiar and influenced everything from ANGEL to THE X-FILES. Another show from the same era is the BIONIC WOMAN, the spin-off series from THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN. The shows success was not so much for the stories but because Lindsay Wagner was fancied my huge numbers of the male population.

The new version features an equally attractive (but brunette) Michelle Ryan (Eastenders) as Jaime Sommers, whose life is turned upside down when she is hit by a car and seriously injured. Her only hope is a top-secret procedure in which she receives experimental medical enhancements. As Jaime soon discovers, her salvation has come at a high price, changing her life and body forever.

The cutting edge surgery, performed by her boyfriend, gives her advanced bionic prosthetics and implants with extraordinary new strength, among other artificially enhanced gifts. Now, however, Jaime must figure out how best to use her new abilities while embracing her new bionic identity.

As she adjusts to her new bionic powers Jaime agrees to work for the Berkut Group, a quasi-governmental private organization that performed her surgery. She also has to grapple with her nemesis Sarah Corvus (Katee Sackhoff – BATTLESTAR GALACTICA) the first Bionic Woman, as well as raising a rebellious younger sister Becca (Lucy Kate Hale – THE O.C.).

Throughout the season, Jaime and the Bionic team travel all over the world whilst encountering assassins, deadly plots and mysterious individuals. Unfortunately it was axed in the US, which could mean that it is actually all right, despite the reservations.

BIONIC WOMAN is out now on DVD from Univeral PlayBack and is available from major retailers including Amazon and Play.
