Proxima - competition
It seems that at the moment the French and Spanish (and I'll include Mexicans) are producing some of the most interesting genre films. Actually it has been going on for some time, with the likes of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro from France and Guillermo del Toro for the Spanish speakers. Films like THE ORPHANGE are further proof that the Spanish are making international films. At this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival the best and most interesting genre films were all Spanish language. And of course we at SCI-FI-LONDON have always found places for original French and Spanish films. At SFL6 we showed the low-budget Spanish sci-fi PROXIMA, from director Carlos Atanes, which is now available on DVD. Despite the fact that it is obviously shot on video and some of its production values and special effects suffer from budgetary constraints (for example, relying on that old Doctor Who standby – the abandoned quarry), it is a film rich in ideas with some great performances that remind us that English speakers do not have a monopoly on acting talent.
Like K-PAX and SOLARIS its premise is to make you question what is real and what is not. A renown sci-fi writer renounces his previous work as made-up rubbish and declares he has found a portal to another world orbiting the star Proxima and proclaims that anyone can be transported there by listening to his latest book on CD. Of course his fans don't believe him, except Tony, the owner of a genre DVD store, who is having plenty of earthbound troubles of his own, and he is soon transported to another world – or is he?PROXIMA is available to buy now from www.welcometoproxima.com
We have two copies of the DVD to give away, courtesy of Fortknox. To be in the draw click on the link below. Competition closes on August 15 2008.
